The summer of 2022 Girder Music sophomore album from Dale Thompson & the Boon Dogs, I See Red, builds upon the groups self-titled debut full length from the preceding year (also Girder).  As its namesake implies, the group is the project of iconic vocalist Dale Thompson, whom is best known for his work in Bride but has also participated in projects too numerous to mention but with the most noteworthy in my opinion being The World Will Burn, Perpetual Paranoia, The Reconciled, The Thomas Thompson Earth Project and Sovereign Cross.  As far as ‘the Boon Dogs’ side of things goes, that would include holdover bassist and co-founding member Gregory Bruce Campbell and new drummer Edu Diux in addition to a host of guest guitarists encompassing include brother Troy Thompson, Greg Martin, Garret Thomas, Sean Silas, Scottie Hoaglan and others.
I See Red maintains the blues heavy rock direction to the debut, aligning a gritty guitar proclivity and shuffling bass with artists signature gritty and raspy vocal qualities to create a work I see appealing to fans of Glenn Kaiser Band, Stevie & The Saints, Darrell Mansfield, Greg Chaisson, Sign of Jonah and Big Chris & D'Bare Bones Band. If anything, I See Red takes things to the next level musically by extending songwriting from the three to four minute range to its predecessor to that in excess of five to six minutes.  Upshot is a bit more depth and substance musically from how individual songs are allowed time to build and separate, and make better-defined statements, not that the debut songwriting was in any way flawed (a fine album in its own right).Those that have followed Thompson’s career know he is no stranger to the blues, noting not just his work in Bride(referencing classic blues based hard rock releases Kinetic Faith and Snakes In The Playground) but also the varied blues-rock solo material he has put out over the years.  Hence, manner in which his stout, lower register vocals complement opener “I See Red”, scratchy and grainy with Campbell’s thickly woven bass, cutting guitar licks and chops but also enlivened with Hammond B3 decorating the back end. If anything, “I See Red”, sets the quality tone for the material to follow.

Nice Jacket Records announces the online release of “The Cataclysm Catechism”, the 2nd collection of Christian music by J. Howard Duff. This release has a very different feel than its predecessor, “My God Is…Awesome (He’s Everything)”. On “The Cataclysm Catechism”, J. Howard returns to his musical roots of electric guitar based rock n’ roll, blues, and blues-based rock. “This ain’t your fathers’ Christian music” he said when asked to characterize the new album. With a much harder edge than the last release, J. Howard’s past 52 years of listening, absorbing, and playing & singing the musical styles he grew up with is at the forefront of the new album. The influence of Chuck Berry, Carlos Santana, Paul Kossoff, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Cropper & Jeff Beck are evident throughout the album. “These are the guys I grew up with”, says Duff. “The only difference between me & them is that it took me 50 years to get to be 5% as good as them!”

J. Howard Duff's long musical journey began in the New York/New Jersey metro area. He formed the J. Howard Duff Band in the 1970s, playing with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Blackfoot, Todd Rundgren, and the J. Geils Band. In the 1980s, he and his wife Dawn formed the infamous punk band, Partners In Crime, whose records entered the top 20 Indie charts worldwide. After moving to South Carolina in the late 1990s, he went back to his original blues roots, playing solo and as an acoustic guitarist and vocalist for the duo, Metro Blues, releasing a critically acclaimed CD.

J.B. Davis, a veteran New Orleans performer born and raised along the Gulf Coast in Mobile, Alabama, and Moss Point, Mississippi, where the emphasis is on a musical approach that matches the soft, gentle breezes blowing off Gulf Coast waters. Reworking a dozen tunes familiar to hardcore blues and R&B fans, Davis gives each one its own soul-satisfying treatment, showcasing his smooth-as-silk vocals with understated-but-clearly-rocking band arrangements.It’s no accident, therefore, that this self-taught singer and keyboard player would use a gently swaying Fats Domino hit, “Walking to New Orleans,” as his title tune. And to vary the pace, that he would turn just as easily to the fast shuffle rhythm and B.B. Producer and former studio owner Isaiah B Brunt has traveled from his native Australia all the way to New Orleans to record his new album titled Just The Way That It Goes.He is basically an electric blues story teller. He pays homage to  classic American blues but his slide technique and use of a wah-wah pedal propel the sound into the present. He may not be flashy but he is a master technician who is able to convey emotion and a personal connection though his music. Bassist Richard Bird and drummer Mark Whitaker are a competent rhythm section and provide a solid foundation for his guitar expertise.

Will Wilde has taken the harmonica way beyond its traditional blues roots since he first emerged on the music scene in 2010.  Always pushing forward, evolving and redefining his sound.  He gained popularity on Youtube with his awe-inspiring harmonica covers of classic rock guitar solos such as Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird.  Throughout 2022/23 Wilde has been touring with his critically acclaimed rock band Bad Luck Friday, but 2024 sees him return to the blues with the recording of a new solo album (release date TBC).Wilde’s hard-edged harmonica steals the spotlight from the traditional blues rock guitar, with a sound that owes as much to Gary Moore as it does to Sonny Boy Williamson.  "I’m always looking to make new sounds with the harmonica, pushing its boundaries, trying to change people’s perception of it.”  In fact Wilde has gone one step further and created his own signature "Wilde Tuned" harmonicas so he can play licks that weren’t possible before.  “The Wilde tunings help me take things to the next level.  They enable me to hold my own with any blues rock guitarist.”
